Derek Small

ISWiB is proud to announce that Derek Small will be holding an open lecture at this year's festival on July 13th! ISWiB 2010 preparations are underway

ISWiB 2009 ended 5 months ago. In one week, 200 students from 42 countries faced the Challenge of Changes.

What we've accomplished last year gave us the will and motivation to start organizing ISWiB 2010, as early as September.

With the headline "Do We Tolerate Intolerance?", ISWiB 2010 will be held 11th-18th July 2010.

We hope that this year's ISWiB will outdo all the previous ones, both by quality and popularity.

All info about the workshops, applications and participation fees will be known and published on ISWiB's website after February 1st.

They spent amazing and unforgettable week in Belgrade, starting with June 28, participated in nine workshops, listening and discussing in lectures and open events, having fun and meeting Serbian culture. So many emotions on their leaving Belgrade proves this International Student Week made its point - we globalized the students from different countries in one place and created a great community!

As a result of educational part of ISWiB - there are products of each workshop: first amateur biodiesel from Ecology workshop, short movies from Video Art, magazines from Media guys. Great presentations have come from Arts & Culture, Economics, Psychology, Society, Photo Art and Education. So many people from different countries definitely brought some new experiences and conclusions.

Selection process finished
ISWiB Org Team has just sent information to all the applicants to inform them on their final status. Those who are accepted are happy, and we know some of you are disappointed about not being invited, but our team had to choose only 130 participants out of more than 370 applications, and that means just every third applicant could have been invited.

Days and nights were spent in reading applications many times, cutting the list one-by-one until we got the number needed. The criteria were very strict: the most important were your essays and motivation to attend ISWiB07, also we had to make balance between participants with experience and those who are coming for the first time, we also took care about gender balance and the number of people in every workshop. We also tried to invite as many different countries as possible.

We are waiting now for your confirmation of coming to Belgrade, and as for the invitation letters, they are on their way to your mailboxes.

Selection of candidates underway
There is a great deal of interest for participation in International Student Week in Belgrade 2007, as it can be seen from the number of applications. The organizers will have a difficult job to select 130 students from Europe out of more than 370 applicants from 50 different countries. The most applications are received from Turkey (58), then Romania and Ukraine, and a significant number of them from former Yugoslav Republics - Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as from Germany, Hungary, Poland, Norway. Among applicants there are citizens of non-European countries studying in Europe, like Brazil, U.S.A., Mexico, Malaysia, Zimbabwe...

Judging by their applications, the most interesting workshop is Society for the potential participants of ISWiB, hosted by professor Andrew Mycock, PhD from the University of Manchester. The second most wanted workshop is Economics, and there is also a great interest in Art & Culture and Media workshop. All the applicants will be informed on their status via e-mail by the end of the week, and then they will receive the letter of invitation as an official confirmation.

German Ambassador - Patron of ISWiB 2007
The first press conference to announce ISWiB 2007 was held today in Goethe - Institute in Belgrade. In the presentation hall full of students, partners and media representatives, Organizing team presented the whole project, the programme for this year's conference as well as the results of the work done so far and the way the preparations are going. Representatives of German Embassy in Belgrade, GTZ and European Movement in Serbia were present at this press conference.
Goethe
Heike Poerksen, First Secretary of German Embassy in Belgrade announced the patronage of German ambassador for this event.

"The German Embassy in its current function as EU presidency welcomes the efforts of the International Student Week to organize a gathering of European students here in Belgrade this summer. The German ambassador has asked me to send his greetings and confirmation that he will take over the patronage for the event" - said she today. "Why is the German embassy interested in such international youth programmes for Serbia? The main reason is that around 80% of Serbian young people have never travelled abroad and only few have international experiences. As young people are the most important asset for Serbia's future, it is a priority of the German government and the German ambassador personally to provide possibilities for young Serbians to travel, but also to meet other European young people from abroad here, on the territory of Serbia."

"During the International Student Week, young people will be given the chance to get to know other European students of their age, to compare university systems and to get an insight into different topics of political, social and economic relevance and - most importantly - to discuss those topics amongst each other from their own different perspectives. In this way, participants will broaden their horizons both specifically on those topics and generally".

Project manager of GTZ - one of the partners and donors of ISWiB 2007 - Dr Gustav Reier has said he is very happy to see how the organizing team has developed the upcoming festival so far and pointed out that the press conference makes him believe even more that the contribution of GTZ has been a good investment.

"GTZ not only supports the establishing of a competitive market economy but also acts as an important partner of civil society as we express with this co-operation. The organizing team of the "World Youth Wave - Serbia" has shown strong and impressive involvement within the youth sector in Belgrade and with its main event the "International Student Week in Belgrade - ISWIB07" it gives Serbian students as well as other European Students an opportunity to come together and debate hot issues concerning both Serbia and the rest of Europe. We were especially interested in supporting topics concerning education of youth and young adults, and "World Youth Wave - Serbia" has generated the Workshops Education, that will focus on the Bologna and Copenhagen Process and WS Ecology that will focus on environmental standards and new technologies, an attractive platform for the social involvement of the GTZ. We strongly believe that the gathering of European students in Serbia will trigger positive relations between young European citizens, based on mutual understanding and tolerance, values that GTZ is strongly promoting. We therefore wish the organization and its partners all the best and good success for the upcoming months".

Organizers expressed their thanks to the support coming from all the partners in the project and particularly emphasized their belief that they will live up to all expectations.

Deadline extended
ISWiB team wants to thank all of you who have sent the applications so far. We have received e-mails from all over Europe: from the Netherlands, France, Germany to Belarus, Ukraine, and Turkey. Together with e-mail, we have received many questions and a few objections regarding the short time that wanna-be participants have at their disposal for writing the required essays. Having that in mind, we decided to extend application deadline and give all the people more time to try their best to impress the ISWIB team...:)

You can send your Application Forms till April 15, after which the selection process starts.
